Global management consulting firm Kearney has released the 2024 Global Cities Index (GCI), showing Nanjing’s rise from 93rd last year to 83rd this year, its highest ranking to date.
The GCI measure city connectivity across five dimensions: business activity, human capital, information exchange, cultural experience, and political engagement. Two new assessment criteria - Internet speed and data center presence – were added this year, helping digitally connected cities like Nanjing advance their ranks.
Among the 31 Chinese cities listed, Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong made it into the global top 10, with 13 Chinese cities in the top 100. The Yangtze River Delta region contributed the most cities, with Suzhou entering the top 100 for the first time, and Ningbo, Hefei and Wuxi among the top 150 cities.
Nanjing has actively developed its digital infrastructure. By mid-2024, its completed and under-construction data centers accounted for 40% of Jiangsu’s total capacity. Nanjing also plans to establish four artificial intelligence data centers for public use, boasting the province’s biggest computing capacity.
By 2025, Nanjing aims to establish a comprehensive data security system that features data classification and grading, expand data openness and integration, and foster diverse data products and services.
