Yancheng, Suzhou Industrial Park and Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone have been included in China’s list of the first batch of 25 pilot cities and 10 high-tech industrial development parks aiming at peaking carbon dioxide emissions.
Among cities in Jiangsu, Yancheng boasts the longest coastline, the largest mudflats and wetlands, and the richest marine resources. In particular, it is also one of the world’s best locations for offshore wind farms.
As of the end of October 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy in Yancheng reached 13.6 million kilowatts, which is 22% of the province’s total. Specifically, the installed capacities for wind and photovoltaic power accounted for 41.5% and 10.7% of the province’s total, respectively.
Over 29 years, Suzhou Industrial Park has evolved into a modern high-tech hub. In 2022, it launched China’s first market-based inclusive carbon trading system for voluntary transactions.
The park has established a regional-level trading system and its smart service platform has attracted 64 registered entities. It also promotes low-carbon transformation among companies through trainings and support in establishing energy management system and applying eco-friendly technologies. To date, the park’s 21 enterprises have been recognized in the national green manufacturing system.
In Nanjing’s Jiangning Economic and Technological Development Zone, 70% of the industrial output by enterprises above the designated size came from high-tech enterprises. The zone is home to over 50 intelligent factories (workshops), more than one-third of Nanjing’s total. Over the past five years, the zone has reduced its industrial energy intensity by an average of 4% annually.
