The 300,000 DWT channel of Lianyungang Port, the highest grade artificial deep-water channel constructed in the open coastal muddy shallows in China and even in the world, opened for service on September 17.
The first 300,000-ton channel in Jiangsu Province is expected to play an important role in driving the province’s coastal development and maritime transport for the Belt and Road Initiative.
Lianyungang is located at the intersection of Jiangsu's coastline and the beginning of the Longhai (Lianyungang-Lanzhou) Railway, also the largest seaport in the province. The National Development and Reform Commission approved the construction of the 300,000-ton channel in order to improve the port services in 2009.
When tide is rising, the outer section of the 70.5 km-long channel can satisfy the needs of bulk carriers and oil tankers with a carrying capacity of 300,000 tons navigating in one-way, and the inner section is suitable for the one-way navigation of 300,000-ton bulk carriers. Xuwei waterway can meet the needs of tide-dependent navigation for 300,000-ton oil tankers in one-way.
Following the opening, the maritime department will strengthen planning and services to enhance the waterway use efficiency, improve the functions of the port, and promote the development of coastal industry clusters.
