Jiangsu's gross ocean product (GOP) rose 12.5% to over 924.8 billion yuan in 2021, accounting for 7.9% of the province’s GDP, according to the Department of Natural Resources on April 29.
In breakdown, the added value of the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors of the marine economy reached 53.67 billion yuan, 431.11 billion yuan and 440.05 billion yuan respectively, accounting for 5.8%, 46.6% and 47.6% of the GOP.
The department also said Jiangsu’s major marine industries recovered strongly in 2021, with the added value of 363.55 billion yuan, up 16.1% over the previous year.
The maritime fishery sector maintained the transformation to feature a better industrial structure. Jiangsu’s installed capacity of offshore wind power and annual power generation both ranked among the top in the country. The ship orders also increased significantly, taking first place in China. The capacity of seawater desalination continued to increase last year. In addition, the marine biomedical industry has been developing steadily. Despite recovery, tourism in coastal destinations didn’t return to pre-epidemic levels.
