Lianyungang was recognized as one of China’s eight pilot cities of information consumption in 2021, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The eight cities were selected through experts’ evaluation, online defense and a step of taking public opinions and suggestions. Lianyungang is also the only city from Jiangsu Province to win the recognition.

The coastal city has achieved full coverage of fiber-optics Internet and 4G across its urban and rural areas, provided free WiFi in key public areas, and ensured 98% of villages accessible to fiber-optics Internet. As of last December, the city had built and opened 4,450 5G base stations.

The city's e-commerce retail sales exceeded 70 billion yuan in 2021, up 28% year-on-year. It is home to more than 9,000 e-commerce companies, about 92,000 online shops and some 800,000 people working in e-commerce.

The city has also made strides in the digital transformation of administration at four levels, from residential communities to townships, counties and citywide. The My Lianyungang app covers 2,240 kinds of public services, boasts 2.2 million real-name certified users and 200,000 daily active users, already providing 780 million services to the public.

To actively cope with the impact of COVID-19 and improve the environment for information consumption, the city issued consumption vouchers worth 43 million yuan since 2020, which was estimated to stimulate the consumer spending of 219 million yuan and benefit more than 60,000 businesses.
