The transport sector in East China’s Jiangsu Province made great strides in the structural adjustment and pollution control in 2020, according to the province’s Green Transport Development Report.

The report released by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transport showed a series of measures including the green cargo transport and sustainable port led to results of energy-saving and carbon emission cut. Compared with 2019, the energy consumption and carbon emission intensity decreased by 3.9% and 1.3% for commercial trucks, and by 8.7% and 11.8% in port production.

In the past year, the province promoted the use of 55,000 new energy commercial vehicles and 75,000 clean energy commercial vehicles, an increase of 358% and 5.6% than in 2015. The province also built 24 LNG-powered vessels and renovated 68 large vessels to be powered by LNG.  The main ports, locks and water service areas along the coast or the river was able to provide shore power supply. The Huxi Waterway of the Grand Canal and Shiqiao Lock became flagship projects in the ecological protection campaign. Suzhou, Yangzhou and Huai’an are now home to four demonstration areas of green, modern shipping development.  In addition, the T2 terminal of Nanjing Lukou International Airport has won the recognition of three-star green building standard, the first in China.

Smooth progress was also made in dealing with the pollution caused by ships and ports in the province. In last year, domestic wastewater treatment was available in all cargo ships above 400t in Jiangsu, as well as 17,300 vessels under 400t, accounting for 60 percent of the country’s total. Facilities for trash management, domestic and oily wastewater treatment are taking shape in the province's port terminals.

Jiangsu also continued to improve the comprehensive transport network. The volume of goods sent by railway increased from 50.66 million tons at the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan to 68.66 million tons last year, an increase of 35.5%. Up to 94.2% of coastal ports now supports the freight collection and distribution system, which helps to save energy and leads to a fall of road freight totaling 19 million tons. Jiangsu had 11 river container ports that handled 655,000 TEUs, 2.75 times and 3.87 times of the level in 2015.
