Editor’s Note: On the afternoon of March 5, Chinese President Xi Jinping, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, participated in a deliberation with his fellow deputies from the delegation of Jiangsu Province at the third session of the 14th National People's Congress. Six Jiangsu NPC deputies including Zhao Jianjun, Li Xiaona and Ke Jun, spoke at the meeting.
In 2024, for the first time in 30 years, Taihu Lake’s average water quality reached Grade III on the country's five-tier water quality system. The lake saw the average density and area of algae blooms drop year on year by 17.5% and 15.8%, respectively. For the first time, the biodiversity index of aquatic organism in the lake was rated as fairly good. NPC deputy Zhao Jianjun, mayor of Wuxi, highlighted the achievements of a new round of cleanup efforts at Taihu Lake. Since implementing a fishing ban, the populations of three key species – two fish and one shrimp- have tripled in the lake. Notably, over 30,000 black-headed gulls appeared at Turtle Head Isle last winter and this spring, becoming a new attraction.
