The size of the public space under bridges in Jiangsu Province has expanded rapidly over the years due to the construction of elevated bridges or overpasses during accelerated urbanization. Recently, several cities in Jiangsu Province have turned their attention to such public space as part of efforts to increase the recreational and sports venues for the public.

In Wuxi, the sports field built under the elevated bridge of Gaolang Road is currently the city’s largest public venue for people of all ages. It features a children's playground, a recreation zone for the elderly, and an area for competitive sports favored by young people. The sports field, mainly in blue and gray colors, is equipped with fitness facilities, ping pong tables, and courts for soccer, basketball and tennis. Wuxi has already completed the upgrading of 34 under-bridge spaces in 2023.

The renovation of such space typically follows a “one site, one design” approach. Wuxi has incorporated walkways, plants, Chinese-style landscaping, and captivating paintings to highlight diverse topics, including the city’s history of industrial and commercial development.

In Kunshan City, the space under Xiaolin Road Bridge connects the riverfront and showcases traditional culture in a beautiful setting, such as Kunqu Opera.

Suzhou City is conducting studies on the design and planning of under-bridge space. The city aims to promote the management and use of such spaces from multiple perspectives, including public leisure activities, parking, and emergency response.
