A new regulation to protect the shoreline of the Yangtze River in Nanjing City came into force on January 1.
The great river's shoreline spans 280.82 kilometers in Nanjing, playing an important role in the city's economic and social development and environmental protection.
The regulation has 56 articles under 7 chapters to make provisions on protection and restoration, green development, supervision and other topics.
Yao Zhenglu, director of the Legislative Affairs Commission of Nanjing Municipal People's Congress, said the regulation focuses on systematic governance, rational use and targeted control, close coordination and sharing of shoreline protection achievements.
Nanjing aims to become a role model in the county's initiative of building the Yangtze River National Cultural Park and advance the inheritance and promotion of Yangtze River cultural legacy. Efforts will also be made to strengthen the protection of historical and cultural areas, traditional villages and relics associated with the river.
Among the articles, Nanjing prohibits the construction and expansion of chemical industrial parks or projects within one kilometer of the shoreline of the main tributary. Polluters of the river basin will be held legally responsible.
