A video of Liu Tingting, member of the 31st China Medical Team to Zanzibar, has attracted many online views on Douyin. It's about her last work day in Zanzibar.
On August 31, a student of the State University of Zanzibar and her young sister asked Liu to help treat a disease that has afflicted the junior for more than 10 years.
It’s said the girl began to have skin bumps at around three years old, leaving her body to be covered by scars.
The girl’s family has tried ways to cure the disease, but no progress has been made, said Liu. The patient, 15, also faced difficulties in walking due to surgeries to remove the swellings, and she could only take painkillers along with therapeutic exercise to relieve her condition.
Liu, also a radiologist at the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, said medical imaging showed the presence of calcification in soft tissues. She contacted dermatologists in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Nantong through video link. It’s agreed that the disorder comes from a kind of soft tissue calcification, but it’s impossible to perform more tests due to the limited medical resources.
Liu said she will take all the medica records back to China and continue to help the patient.
In the video, the university student said “xiexie” in Chinese, thank you, to Liu.
“The year-long mission is coming to an end. Before I leave, I will tidy it up to welcome the new arrivals for the next mission,” Liu said.
Jiangsu Province dispatched its first medical team to Zanzibar in August 1964. Since 1993, the province has also taken on the task of sending medical teams to Guyana and Malta. Over the past 58 years, medical professionals from Jiangsu have performed tens of thousands of surgeries and trained a large number of medical technicians for the region.
