Xuzhou City will make fiscal spending of 2.1 billion yuan to add over 690,000 mu (46,000 hectares) of high-quality farmland this year.

Huzhai Town in the city’s Peixian County is home to 1,000 mu of such quality farmland. On March 24, Meng Qingyong, a farmer of Zhongzha Village, operated a drone for weed control. Meng said the field used to suffer from water shortage but it has been transferred into a fertile ground thanks to the city’s agricultural development initiative.

"I have contracted this piece of land for two years and the harvest has been very good. The wheat yield is about 550 kg per mu, and 700 kg of rice per mu,” said Meng.

The city’s initiative to build high-quality farmland, an effort for modernization of agriculture, means providing full-fledged support, such as field ditches, roads, bridges and water supply controls. Such efforts have improved the conditions of agricultural infrastructure and boosted the crops production.

By the end of 2021, the city had built 7.267 million mu of such quality farmland, accounting for 80% of the city's arable land area. The average rice and wheat yield in the renovated farmland is 580 kg and 450 kg respectively.
