To meet the demand for parking, Nanjing will add 85,000 shared parking spaces that are originally reserved for internal use by Party and Government offices, enterprises and public institutions.
In the pilot program, a total of 360 Party and Government offices will share their 33,275 parking spots with the city’s drivers. All 232 car parks operated by state-owned enterprises will also open to the public and this will add 52,663 parking spaces.
Jin Anfan, director of the city’s urban management department, said Nanjing has a clear road map to improve the operation and use of car parking spaces. Nanjing currently has 1,321 public car parks, among which 1,249 have joined an online platform and the rest 72 are undergoing an equipment upgrade to be connected with the system.
The city has encouraged Party and Government offices, enterprises and public institutions to open at least 20% of their internal parking spaces to the public and also makes it clear that the parking charge falls under the category of administrative fees, which form part of the revenue. Currently, many of the newly shared parking spaces have completed the registration of the planned parking fees. Meanwhile, car parks by state-owned enterprises will be managed by the enterprises on their own.
Nanjing will continue to increase the number of shared parking spaces. Residents can apply for the parking spots by phone calls or through an online platform – Nanjing Parking, which includes information of 500,000 spaces in 11 districts and Jiangbei New Area.
