As the second coastal power transmission channel became operational in Jiangsu Province on December 23, the offshore wind power project in Yancheng City with an installed capacity of 300,000 kW was finally connected to the grid network.
This success also means Jiangsu’s offshore wind farms connected to the grid boast a total installed capacity of 10 million kW, the largest in China.
The new channel helps transmit green power from China’s north to its south area and also bolsters the transition to high-quality, low-carbon economic development.
According to the National Energy Administration, by the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Jiangsu's installed capacity of offshore wind power projects reached 5.73 million kW, accounting for more than 60% of the country’s total, an increase of 5.27 million kW compared to 2015. The installed capacity in the province is expected to surge to 13 million kW by the end of 2025.
Chen Songtao, head of the Planning and Management Office of the Electric Power Construction Department at State Grid Jiangsu Branch, said the use of clean energy transmitted through the new channel per year is equivalent to saving 36.9 million tons of coal, cutting the emissions of 29.91 million tons of carbon dioxide and 135,000 tons of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
It’s estimated that the new channel will transmit nearly 30 billion kilowatt hours a year to the Yangtze River Delta region, which will help generate a total output worth 20 billion yuan by upstream and downstream industries and a regional GDP of 275 billion yuan.
