The S&T Innovation Alliance for the Protection of Migratory Aquatic Organisms was established in Nantong City of Jiangsu Province on September 26.
Zhong Xiaming, Party chief of the Jiangsu Marine Fisheries Research Institute, said the Yangtze River estuary, a border area among Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, is unique as a migratory channel for migratory aquatic organisms in river and sea.
However, the frequent illegal fishing in the estuary has seriously damaged the aquatic resources and hindered the fish migration through the river and sea, directly impeding the 10-year fishing ban on key areas of the Yangtze River to protect biodiversity.
Nantong, close the river and sea, is home to many aquatic species and clusters that grow and inhabit in the Yangtze River and the estuary. In 2020, the city became the first in Jiangsu to fully implement tasks under the 10-year fishing ban.
In line with the Yangtze River protection campaign, the alliance will promote interdisciplinary researches to address outstanding challenges and help the government policy-making.
