The Grand Canal Research Institute of Yangzhou University has launched an online platform to provide the most immersive viewing experience of the ancient waterway thanks to the use of different types of rich media content.
The database includes 162 720° panorama images, wide-angle, vertical and horizontal shots that allow the viewer to observe a space in great detail as if being there. These images show all the cultural sites, heritage waterways and more than 30 important venues, such as parks and temples, along the Jiangsu section of the Grand Canal.
A team led by Yang Jian and Wang Ling of the university spent three years in creating the online program. Yang said people can view the desktop or mobile versions of the section’s heritage and glamours. The platform has also embedded VR technology to give viewers a more vivid experience.
