Yangzhou’s urban management authority has mobilized over 1,600 staff members and nearly 6,000 sanitation workers to strengthen the cleaning and disinfection since the city registered locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases on the night of July 27.

Intensive efforts have been made to offer assistance to medics at COVID-19 nucleic acid testing stations or residential communities under lockdown, such as registering information, keeping orders, and facilitating restriction measures.

Household waste generated at these sites were all collected, transported and disposed of separately to control the COVID-19 spread. The waste also got disinfected for several times during their transportation.

Wang Qing, an officer of the Yangzhou Environmental Sanitation Management Department, said the transfer stations for domestic waste are disinfected at least twice a day, such as the walls, ground and equipment, and they also provide separate containers to dispose of waste from quarantine sites.

Once transported to an incineration plant, the waste got burnt immediately rather than waiting for a week of fermentation in the conventional practices. The plant has also increased disinfection to cover all operation places and passages.

Yangzhou is now able to dispose of 1,900 tons of waste daily, around the same amount of waste collected from the main urban area every day.
