China's first 220kV smart substation completed in Changzhou

Changzhou City became home to China’s first 220kV smart substation, the highest voltage of its kind, on May 19.

The renovated Gehu Lake Smart Substation features intelligent functions, such as automatic alarm, robotic inspection replacing human workers, and proactive response.

The smart substation is one of the key projects in new infrastructure initiative by State Grid, which involves wide application of IoT, Big Data and AI to accelerate digital transformation of electricity facility.

In 2020, the State Grid will expand the digital drive and build nine smart substations in seven provinces, with voltages ranging from 110 to 500 kV.
