Located in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, Yaoli Village covers 2.5 square kilometers and sits beside the water.

Today, a group of young people can be seen throughout the village. These Gen Z youth, with an average age under 30, are reimagining the village through art.

“China’s rural areas have great potential. It is a mutual choice, and we are the pioneers.” Through field research, these young “new villagers” draw inspiration from the land, transforming the village into their creative studio.

The curious original residents are intrigued by the arrival of young people. The young rural builders have made life less lonely for the elders.

In China, more than 12 million people have turned to the countryside to start businesses. They changed course and put down roots in the land, finding new possibilities for livelihood and for dreams. As old villages meet new generations, new stories are taking root.
