Barbizon is a small village on the southern outskirts of Paris, near the Forest of Fontainebleau. It rose to fame through art.
In the mid-19th century, a former grocery store converted into an inn became a gathering place for painters—including renowned artists like Millet, Rousseau, and Corot. They stepped out of their studios and into nature, painting directly in the fields and forests. Their work gave rise to what became known as the Barbizon School.
From then on, Barbizon became known as the “village of painters.”
More than a century later, the old inn has been transformed into a museum, preserving traces of the artists’ lives and work. The village continues to attract art lovers from around the world.
New galleries and tea rooms have opened, turning the village into a quiet escape for people from the city. Artists from different schools have settled here, still drawing inspiration from the surrounding forest and countryside.
