"The General History of Yangzhou" was officially published on December 4, marking the first comprehensive study of the city’s history spanning over 2,000 years, from the pre-Qin period (before 221 B.C.) to the Republic of China.

The publication, comprising six volumes and eight books, contains over 4 million Chinese characters. It’s a major academic research project supported by the CPC Yangzhou Committee and the government. Starting in 2017, Yangzhou University was commissioned by the Publicity Department of the CPC Yangzhou Committee to organize and compile this work.

The book provides chronological accounts of Yangzhou, detailing major events, changes in the city's landscape, culture and social customs. It also includes insights into the city’s historical evolution, featuring the 7,000-year-old Longqiuzhuang ruins, and holds significant academic value.

Zhang Changjin, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Yangzhou Committee and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Yangzhou Committee, emphasized the importance of this work in preserving the city's memory, continuing its cultural legacy, and highlighting the people’s love for their home and country. It will also boost cultural confidence and advance the culture of reading while contributing to the city’s social and economic development, according to Zhang.
