Jiangsu’s transport infrastructure investment in the first three quarters totaled 201.34 billion yuan, representing a year-on-year increase of 10.4%, according to the province’s Department of Transport on October 29.
This included spending of 151.27 billion yuan for highway and waterway infrastructure construction. During the period, Jiangsu also launched eight of the nine key transport projects planned for the year.
Main indicators show quality transport growth
In the first three quarters, the province’s total freight traffic and turnover volume reached 2.25 billion tonnes and 957.1 billion tonne-km, up 12.4% and 12.0%, respectively.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday (from September 29 to October 6), the province's highways, railways, waterways and civil aviation recorded 19.889 million passenger trips, or 2.486 million passenger trips per day, an increase of 78.7% compared to the same period in 2022.
Smooth progress in ports
In the first three quarters, Jiangsu’s cargo throughput and container handling stood at 2.56 billion tonnes and 18.717 million TEUs, up 7.9% and 7.1% year-on-year respectively.
Lianyungang, Wuxi and Suzhou have extended their trade routes to Vladivostok, Oslo, Busan and Southeast Asia. Notably, Lianyungang operates a transport network linking Russian Far East and the Arctic Ocean to the north and Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka to the south.
During the same period, the province's ports handled 460 million tonnes and 8.73 million TEUs of foreign trade freight, showing year-on-year growth of 14.5% and 9.6% respectively. This included 2.34 million TEUs passing through Lianyungang Port and 4.37 million TEUs via Suzhou Port, up 15.8% and 9.6% year-on-year, respectively.
Stability in international supply chain
Jiangsu registered 1,667 China-Europe freight train trips during the first nine months, an increase of 13.4% year-on-year.
Meanwhile, airports in Jiangsu also expanded operations, adding flights to popular destinations such as Thailand and Japan. In September, the province also opened new routes to Taichung and Seoul.
In total, the province's nine airports provided service for 41.631 million passengers, 2.1 times the figure from the same period last year.
Besides, the ocean freight turnover reached 201.2 billion tonne-km, an increase of 30.3% year-on-year.
