Jiangsu’s gross ocean product reached 924.9 billion yuan in 2021, up 12.5% year on year, the highest growth in recent three years, according a report on marine economy released in April.

The province has 954 kilometers of coastline, 37,500 square kilometers of sea area, and 35,900 square kilometers of coastal land area. Jiangsu’s gross ocean product accounted for 7.9% of the provincial GDP and 10.2% of the country’s marine economy.

According to the Jiangsu Coastal Region Development Plan (2021-2025), approved by the State Council at the end of last year, the province aims to greatly improve the economic and sci-tech strengths and comprehensive competitiveness of coastal areas by 2035, with the per capita GDP and per capita disposable income of residents to double on the basis of 2020.

The provincial plan sets out different development visions for three coastal cities. Nantong will become a national hub of marine economy and the country’s offshore wind power industry base. Yancheng is to highlight its wetland resources and advance the development of the transnational economic circle around the Yellow Sea. Lianyungang is expected to make progress in building itself into an important international seaport.

Data showed the three cities had a marine economy of 481.81 billion yuan in 2021, an increase of 10.6% over the previous year, accounting for 52.1% of the province's total.

In addition, river and sea ports in Jiangsu handed over 630 million tonnes of cargo in first quarter of the year, a year-on-year growth of 6.2%, according to the Marine Economic Monitoring Center of the provincial Department of Natural Resources. The container throughput stood at 5.12 million TEUs, up 6.3% year-on-year.

The province’s shipbuilding output hit 4.132 million deadweight tonnes (dwt) in the period, and new orders, another major indicator of the shipbuilding industry reached 2.65 million dwt, which brought the shipbuilding holding orders to 45.332 million dwt, an increase of 43.3%. Among the achievements, New Times Shipbuilding Co Ltd received orders for building 14 LNG-powered dual-fuel container ships with a total value exceeding $1.68 billion.

In the shipbuilding and offshore engineering market, Jiangsu aims to claim 40% of the domestic market and 18% of international market by 2025.
