Nantong Museum, founded in 1905 by Zhang Jian, a Chinese industrialist and educator, has joined hands with 30 state-owned and private museums to form an alliance on May 18, International Museum Day, in order to share resources, coordinate exhibitions and boost tourism.
Nantong Museum is the first public museum founded by Chinese and the city today has 30 registered museums, including six at the national third-class level.
Mao Weifeng, director of Nantong Culture, Radio, Film and Tourism Bureau, said the city in recent years has highlighted roles of museum by organizing a series of shows and educational programs.
In last year, Nantong Museum was named a "National Patriotic Education Demonstration Base." The city's museums received more than 3.7 million visitors, an increase of 10% over the previous year. Recently, eight local museums, including China Audit Museum, were included in the first batch of sites for the museum research and study initiative.
