The volume of freight carried through roads, railways, waterways and air routes reached 1.41 billion tons in the first half of the year, and the total transport turnover was 573.6 billion ton-kilometers, up 14.8% and 12.9% respectively, according to the Department of Transport of Jiangsu Province on July 19.

In breakdown, the freight volume and transport turnover delivered through railways and waterways hit 39.7 million tons and 16.55 billion ton-kilometers, 440 million tons and 369 billion ton-kilometers, respectively. Road transport saw the biggest growth of the two indicators, 19.9% and 14.9%, respectively.
In the first half of the year, Jiangsu’s ports handled 1.56 billion tons of cargo, an increase of 12.8% year on year, and this included 300 million tons of foreign trade freight, a year-on-year growth of 14.4%.
Data also showed coal, mining and construction materials were still the main cargo passing through inland river locks in the province. Furthermore, the volume of grain transported by vessels reached over 31.15 million tons, 2.9 times more than the same period of the previous year.
In the first half of the year, Jiangsu airports handled 361,000 tons of cargo and mail, an increase of 20.6% year on year. Among them, 58,000 tons of cargo and mail was for international routes, a year-on-year growth of 42.6%.
