Since ancient times, Jiangsu has been renowned as a land of abundance and a land of fish and rice, where natural landscapes blend harmoniously with cultural attractions. The picturesque water towns of Jiangnan with their pink walls and black tiles, the exquisite and charming garden scenery, the poetic beauty of lakes and mountains, the majestic imperial mausoleums, the bustling commercial streets, the rapid and efficient transportation network, the towering skyscrapers, and modern urban development altogether form the diverse and splendid charm of Jiangsu.
City Walk means strolling through a city, exploring its deep-rooted culture and local life through immersive experiences like walking and cycling. Starting today, JICC is launching a bilingual City Walk Vlog series, taking you on a journey to explore several cities in Jiangsu and discover the unique charm of the Jiangnan region.
The first destination of our City Walk is Laomendong, a place favored by many Nanjing locals.
Instead of going straight into the main street, we turned into an alley on the left-hand side of Laomendong. It is narrow, as if it is the entrance to another world. Surrounded by walls that have been baptized over time, a sense of winding path suffuses in the atmosphere. Even a casual shot is amazing in this alley.
When night falls, bands start to perform on the roadside. Enjoying popular music played by modern instruments on the ancient street, with flashing neon lights and red lanterns hanging high on the roadside, the fantastic fusion of classical and modern culture was charming.
We were also dazzled by the food at the entrance of Laomendong: Duck Blood Vermicelli Soup, red bean soup with rice balls, Xiaolongbao and braised skewers. They are all delicious and affordable.
As we stroll along the streets of Nanjing, it is worth noting that even unassuming little corners could be hiding retro streets. Diaoyutai, where many cafes of different styles located, is about thirty-minute walk from Laomendong. Walking into a random cafe here with your friends and sipping a cup of coffee is very chill.
The impression of a city is often associated with hustle and bustle, but in Nanjing, places like the quiet alleys of Laomendong and the cafes at Diaoyutai offer "artistic surprises" amid the lively atmosphere. During leisure time, why not invite a few friends and stroll through the streets of Nanjing together, seeking out and experiencing the unique charm that belongs solely to this city.
