The Department Ecology and Environment in Nanjing City has reported new progress made in improving the biodiversity in the city.

In addition to the discovery of red-crowned crane in the Lishui section of the Yangtze River and the eastern bent-winged bat, the largest population of silver pheasant in Nanjing was found in the city’s Gaochun District.

"The population size of wildlife is a 'barometer' of an area's ecological environment, and as the ecology continues to improve, more and more rare and endangered species are appearing frequently," said Liu Liu, deputy director of the Soil Ecology Division of the department. Nanjing has continuously improved its biodiversity conservation work in recent years.

To have a clear picture of the biodiversity, Nanjing started a citywide survey in October 2021 and has found 2,530 animal and plant species.
