The world’s largest offshore converter station completed installment on July 18 in waters 70 kilometers away from the coastline in Rudong County, Nantong City of Jiangsu Province.

Electricity is converted from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and vice versa in a converter station. After the converter station is put into operation, it will gather a total of 1,100 MW of electricity generated from three wind farms and convert it into 3.3 billion kWh annually. This is equivalent to saving one million tons of standard coal and slashing 2.51 million tons of carbon dioxide thanks to the wind turbines.

A joint investment by China Three Gorges Corporation and China General Nuclear Power Group, the project also marks the first time the flexible DC transmission technology is used on an offshore wind project in Asia.

Installment of the system, a key component of offshore wind farm, has made full use of the tides, when barges are used to move the components up at high tide and then lowered to the position at low tide. This proved to be an eco-friendly solution to the insufficient lifting capacity of the crane ship.
