CRRC Nanjing Puzhen has unveiled the digital rail-guided rubber-tyred tram (DRT) in Shanghai, the first of its kind in the world.

Sensors on the low-floor tram collect information from magnetic markers on the road surface, help guide the vehicle’s position in real time, and control the move of rubber tyres. The vehicle is able to automatically control the speed, avoid the barrier, and perform other operations to ensure safety, regardless the weather changes. At the same time, it also provides the driver with full information of target speed, stops, and track deviation.

The vehicle, which consists of three cars, is 30.5 meters long and have a maximum speed of 70km/h and a carrying capacity of 302 passengers. Powered by lithium-ion battery with a large scale energy storage, the digital rail-guided rubber-tyred tram is suitable for running on existing roads in cities, saving the trouble to build fixed rails, so it can greatly reduce the operating cost of urban transportation and improve efficiency.
