The expansion project of Terminal 1 at Nanjing Lukou International Airport has won the 3-star Certificate of Green Building Design Label, the first among domestic terminals to win the recognition, according to the Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of Jiangsu Province.

From the very beginning, the project made extensive efforts to be a role model of green building. Such efforts include recycling of steel frames, escalators, boarding bridges and other components during the construction in order to reduce waste. The terminal has also adopted eco-friendly materials and practices, such as the use of solar panels and 174 sensors to improve temperature control and save electricity.
