Unit 6 of the Tianwan nuclear power plant in East China's Jiangsu Province is ready for commercial operation after successfully completing a 100-hour continuous operation assessment at full power on June 2.
Unit 6 is also China National Nuclear Corporation’s 24th reactor in commercial operation, increasing the company's installed generating capacity from 21.391 GW to 22.509 GW. This milestone also means the final success of Phase III of Tianwan nuclear power plant, which includes Unit 5 and Unit 6.
Construction of Unit 5 started on December 27, 2015 and it went into commercial operation on September 8 last year. By June 2, Unit 5 had generated over 6.15 billion kilowatt-hours. Construction of Unit 6 began on September 7, 2016, and it was connected to the grid for the first time on May 11.
The output from the two units will avoid the burning of 5.171 million tonnes of standard coal per year, thus cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 13.56 million tonnes and sulphur dioxide emissions by 44,100 tonnes. The benefits are equivalent to planting 34,000 hectares of trees.
