Nanjing has made great progress in a national pilot program of improving energy efficiency in public buildings.
Since Nanjing became one of the third batch of cities to launch the program in 2017, 39 renovation projects in the city have been accepted, which can save 46 million KWH per year, equivalent to the electricity consumption of 20,000 households.
As an example, the Heyan Road campus of Bole Middle School in Nanjing was plagued by dilapidated facilities and poor energy efficiency for many years. Last year, the school began to improve the energy performance, with efforts taken in air conditioning, lighting and sanitary appliances.
New water-saving devices are used in the toilets, which also improve the air quality. Old lamps have all been replaced with LED energy-saving lamps. Special bulbs installed in the classrooms are also good to student’s eye health. Insulation was installed into the external wall of the school building. The new windows helped control noise and were welcomed by students and teachers. After the renovation, the school can save about 69,000 KWH and 5,000 cubic meters of water per year.
In addition, a number of demonstration projects at Nanjing Gulou Hospital and Zifeng Building have also made positive impacts on people, places or communities.
Nanjing is currently revising the project management for low-energy exemplary buildings, which will provide comprehensive policy support for the initiative and make Nanjing a green city.
