Four governmental departments in Jiangsu Province released the measures on December 17 for people over the statutory retirement age and interns to benefit from the work-related injury insurance program.
According to the province’s departments of human resources and social security, finance, education and the taxation bureau, the new policy will come into effect on February 1 next year.
Employers that pay the insurance premium for their employees need to also extend the service to cover those over the statutory retirement age and interns, with the same rate as their formal employees.
In the past, when an employee over the retirement age became disabled due to a work-related injury, the employer generally paid him or her a lump-sum compensation in accordance with commercial insurance practice, which could hardly ensure the good protection in the later life. The new policy has moved further to address the gap.
According to the new measure, if interns get work-related injuries, they will be eligible to receive a disability allowance based on the seriousness of the disability scale from Grade I to 4, and then receive the old-age pension after the retirement procedure while the disability allowance will be stopped then.
