The Center for Satellite Application on Ecology and Environment, a unit of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, unveiled a facility in Taizhou City of Jiangsu Province to monitor the Yangtze River on September 24.
As the first Big Data-based platform for the longest river in China, the facility’s duties integrate data collection, assessment, early warning and satellite application, achieving a milestone to improve the ecological conservation efforts for the river.

Located in Tianxing Village, Binjiang Town of Taizhou, the facility is composed of a control center, a laboratory to perform tasks rapidly, an emergency equipment room and space for nightshift working. The 24-hour operation means it can detect, identify, respond and handle any ecological and environmental concerns in a timely, efficient manner in order to protect the Yangtze River.
Yangtze River stretches for 97.8 kilometers in Taizhou, accounting for 11.8 percent of the total length in the province. In recent years, Taizhou has focused on restoring the river’s ecological environment, launched many protection initiatives, and also built a data platform by applying cloud computing and the Internet of Things.
