People in Xintu Village in Funing County, hit hard by natural disasters in 2016, are enjoying their new homes subsidized by the local government.
Tornado and hailstone destroyed 557 houses in the village, about a 10-minute drive from the county government, according to Zhou Haihua, the village’s Party chief.
After new houses were built on May 18, 2017, 597 households have moved to the new village. As all infrastructure is finished this year, the occupancy rate is expected to reach 90 percent.
The 79-year-old Chen Kehua and his wife moved into Xintu Village in May 2017 and are satisfied with their new life. The 140-square-meter house cost them 71,000 yuan ($9,907) as the government subsidized 55,000 yuan. With four children working in other places, Chen said his family lives a happy life as the old couple sometimes work in a vegetable greenhouse not far from home. The greenhouse, located on the west side of the village, spans 50 mu (3.33 hectares).
Chen Caiyun, 71, has been working there for seven years, with a monthly salary of 1,800 yuan or an annual income of 20,000 yuan. She used to live in a 50-square-merter house in the past, but now her family has moved to a 140-square-meter two-storey house after spending 110,000 yuan.
"We couldn’t imagine to live in such a good house in the past. Now our life is not comfortable and easy," said Chen.
At present, Xintu Village has 915 households and 3,181 people whose collective income reached 328,000 yuan last year. The per capita income was 20,000 yuan.
