Jiangsu Department of Ecology and Environment held a press conference on April 2 to explain the Jiangsu Province Regulation on Ecological Environment Monitoring, which will take effect on May 1.

Jiangsu is the first province in China to introduce a regional law over the ecological environment monitoring work, which is expected to ensure the sound development base on the rule of law.

Data distortion and other malpractices can seriously compromise the government’s goal to be scientific and authoritative in decision-making.

Liu Xiaolei, head of the department’s ecological environment monitoring unit, said that both institutions and personnel who distort data, fabricate data, or provide false report are liable to punishment, according to this regional law.

Liu added that the regulation has established the legal status of environmental data collected through automatic monitoring for the first time and this will enhance the environment law enforcement.
