Nanjing Port achieved a record container throughput of 3.71 million TEUs in 2024, marking a 7.2% increase from the previous year.
Notably, the port facilitated the docking and departure of nine large vessels with drafts over 11.6 meters, including one vessel at 11.8 meters in October.
Strategically located as a major transshipment hub on the Yangtze River near the Beijing-Shanghai Railway, the port offers the most direct and fastest outlet to the sea for the river’s middle and upper reaches. It also serves as the only port providing intermodal railway-waterway transportation.
Huang Heqing, head of the Port Construction Office at Nanjing Municipal Transportation Bureau, said that last year Nanjing Port added new routes to South America and the Far East, increasing its total number of international routes to 15. The port also completed three railway-waterway intermodal hubs with an annual throughput capacity of 20 million tonnes.
According to the port’s plan 2024-2035, it will accommodate 245 berths with a throughput capacity of 385 million tonnes and a container throughput capacity of 9.6 million TEUs. Nanjing has also announced 32 key projects, with a total investment of over 40 billion yuan expected to be completed within three years, to establish a regional shipping logistics center.
Nanjing Port has facilitated trade by enhancing operational efficiency and reducing logistics costs. For example, the intelligent transformation at Longtan Port Area enabled remote control operators to handle nearly 2.5 times the workload compared to traditional operations, setting a monthly record of 83,000 TEUs handled remotely.
