Nanjing accelerates efforts for ‘city of museums’

Nanjing is intensifying its efforts to become a renowned “city of museums”, focusing on the development of three museum clusters located around Changjiang Road, southern old town, and Zhongshan scenic area, according to the city’s Department of Culture and Tourism on August 24.

The department’s deputy director Huang Qin said Nanjing currently has 70 registered museums and, in the first half of the year, they hosted 105 exhibitions and 1,600 public educational sessions, attracting a total of 15 million visitors.

The capital city of Jiangsu Province plans to accelerate preservation and renewal initiatives in historical and cultural areas such as Xi’nanli, Baiziting and Yihe Road. More efforts will be made to enhance the protection, inheritance and utilization of intangible cultural heritage. The city also aims to further develop attractions under the Art Mall program.

Moreover, Nanjing will advance construction of several key cultural sites, including the Yangtze River Culture Museum, new venue of Nanjing Museum, the new Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the Purple Mountain Observatory Museum.

Nanjing is also committed to making progress in the construction of the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River National Cultural Park, including the protection and research of the river’s cultural relics and heritage, and intends to become a provincial role model in the cultural park initiative.
