Jiangsu Province held the opening ceremony of this year's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day celebrations at the Xijin Ferry scenic area in Zhenjiang City on June 10.
The province will launch 82 key programs featuring its intangible cultural heritage and rich cultural resources as well as many support activities scheduled by the province’s 13 cities that have subordinate districts. The centerpiece will be a shopping festival to link cultural heritage and folk crafts with everyday life, such as the art of eggshell carving and unique hair embroidery work in Dongtai City.
Yang Zhichun, director of the province’s Department of Culture and Tourism, said the shopping festival is an important initiative to improve the quality and form of cultural and tourism offerings and also accelerate the full recovery of the market amid progress in COVID-19 response. The programs will combine the demonstration and sale of food specialties, traditional crafts, and innovative cultural creations.
More than 500,000 people working in the intangible cultural heritage fields will participate the programs held onsite or online from June to December.
Comprehensive efforts have been made to curb the spread of COVID-19 in organizing such programs including 387 participatory and educational activities related to intangible cultural heritage. Some venues have waived the entrance fee, extended business hours, or offered free workshops to encourage the appreciation of culture and heritage.
