The Ministry of Transport and the Jiangsu provincial government have recently approved the master plan for the Nantong Port, which features three river port areas and one coastal port area. 

Rugang Port Area is positioned to be important hub for the middle and upper reaches of Yangtze River, mainly for dry bulk and general cargo carriers. Nantong Port Area will provide the key support for port-based industries and also partly receive cruise ships. Tonghai Port Area serves container vessels and Tongzhou Bay Port Area is poised to become a comprehensive and modern port for containers, dry bulk, liquid bulk, LNG and general cargo, according to the plan.
