A battery-powered ferry of the State Grid Smart Energy Traffic Technology Innovation Center Suzhou hit the water in Taizhou City on the morning of June 26.
The demo vessel built by Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering is capable of transporting 64 TEUs and will be used to run between Anji in Zhejiang Province and Shanghai, about 270 kilometers away.
A major project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the 64TEU inland river container ship has been armed with many new technologies for the first time to ensure the zero emission and high efficiency. Built in three years, the ferry is the first pure battery-powered container vessel originally designed, developed and built by China, a breakthrough in the country’s shipbuilding sector.
The vessel has an overall length of 64.8m, a beam of 12.5m, a depth of 3.4m and a displacement of 994 tons. The battery system enables the vessel to reduce use of 130,000 liters of fuel and emission of 340 tons of CO2 per year.
