Jiangsu’s consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of inflation, rose by 0.6% year-on-year in April and 0.1% compared to the previous month, according to the provincial team of the National Bureau of Statistics on May 13.
Despite fluctuations over the past three months, the CPI has remained below 1% in the economic powerhouse. The April figure marks the third consecutive month of CPI growth this year, indicating expanding consumer market and continued economic recovery.
Since July last year, food prices have been falling maily due to adequate supply, while non-food prices have been rising. In April, the province's food prices fell by 2%, contrasting with increases of 1.1% in non-food prices and 4.9% in health care prices.
Notably, as domestic tourism has surged this year, April saw significant increases in air ticket prices, vehicle rental costs, travel agency fees and accommodation prices.
