The technical innovation of the low-altitude internet of intelligences (IOI) and its application in the Nanjing section of the Yangtze River become the only achievement from Jiangsu Province recognized at the 2023 China Internet of Things Conference and the 2023 National Academic Conference on Communication Theory and Technology in Wuxi City.

Co-hosted by the Chinese Institute of Electronics and the China Institute of Communications, the event showcased the top 10 achievements in China’s burgeoning Internet of Things sector.

The Jiangsu project marks a milestone as it became China’s first 5G-powered IOI for airspace below 300 meters, covering the 98-kilometer-long Nanjing section using the 3.5 GHz spectrum band. Supported by the municipal government and the Pukou High-tech Industrial Development Zone, the network addresses challenges such as the administrative supervision, operation and network coverage in low-altitude airspace.

With this technological achievement, the Nanjing Maritime Bureau developed a drone-centered platform to conduct research on ship behaviors through smart recognition. This has significantly improved waterway supervision, law enforcement, and emergency response. Recently, the low-altitude IOI solution captured a wild boar swimming across the Yangtze River for 12 minutes, with the footage going viral on the Chinese internet.

Liu Jie, head of Nanjing Aero Sport Association, said the low-altitude IOI prevents drones from getting lost over the Yangtze River, which happened in the past due to complex meteorological and electromagnetic conditions. The new technology also ensures precise remote control for drone landing and takeoff as well as real-time data transmission.
