Representatives of returned overseas Chinese and their relatives from across Jiangsu Province attended the 8th congress of the Jiangsu Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (JFROC) in Nanjing on August 31.
The meeting honored models of returned overseas Chinese and outstanding individuals and groups under the JFROC and affiliated organizations.
Professor Wang Chengxiang, executive dean of School of Information Science and Engineering, Southeast University, studied and worked overseas for nearly 20 years, achieving a series of innovative accomplishments in fields including wireless channel measurements and modeling and 5G communication networks. Four years ago, he joined the State Key Laboratory of Mobile Communications Research of Southeast University and his family also settled in Nanjing.
In this congress, Wang won the honour of "Outstanding Person of Returned Overseas Chinese Community in Jiangsu Province". He regarded the JFROC as a big platform and a big family, saying it has provided care and support to him whether he worked abroad in the past or lives in Nanjing. Wang added that he himself also wants to contribute to the unity of the returned overseas Chinese.
As a businessman from South Africa, Zhu Zhonghui is chairman of Jiangsu S&C International Group and chairman of China Dieshiqiao International Home Textile Industrial Park, the largest of its kind in the country. In the meeting, Zhu said the motherland is always the strongest backing for overseas Chinese business people, and the JFROC has facilitated communication and cooperation for them.
"The patriotism and love for the homeland of the old generation of overseas Chinese entrepreneurs will certainly be passed down from generation to generation. We will continue to give back to society and fulfil our social responsibilities through the platform of the JFROC," said Zhu.
Returned overseas Chinese, their relatives and overseas Chinese in the new era have made great contributions to the country and society. The JFROC is committed to promoting cooperation and making the most of the strength of the community for the country’s development.
Yu Xiaodong, a guzheng artist who once worked for the Frontline Art Troupe, was also recognized as “Outstanding Person of Returned Overseas Chinese Community in Jiangsu Province".
Eight years ago, she visited Dabie Mountains for recovery and rehabilitation after a fight against cancer. She happened to find some children there were also interested in the traditional musical instrument and then decided to be their teacher. For eight years, Yu always brought gifts and visited the children to teach them how to play guzheng soon after the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year. In expressing gratitude for the award, Yu promised she will definitely continue her efforts for charity work as long as she’s able to.
To support COVID-19 prevention and control in other countries, federations of returned overseas Chinese at all levels have reached out to students studying abroad and overseas Chinese compatriots, to which the JFROC donated about 600,000 masks, 40,000 pairs of gloves and 24,000 bags of Chinese medicine.
In this campaign, Zhou Xianmei, director of the Department of Internal Medicine and the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine at Jiangsu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has played an active role. With more than 30 years of clinical, research and teaching experience of respiratory diseases, Zhou is the leader of a task force for COVID-19 response at the hospital. Meanwhile, she has gone all out to help overseas Chinese by organizing supplies, holding webinars on the use of TCM, and recording videos on respiratory diseases,
One of leading scientists attending the congress is Shuit-Tong Lee, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and also the dean of the College of Nano Science & Technology (CNST) at Soochow University. With a research interest in nanomaterial and nanotechnology, he has made outstanding contributions to the fields of functional nanomaterials and devices, organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display technology, and diamond and super-hard thin film technology.
At the invitation of Soochow University in 2008, Lee brought his research team from Hong Kong with him to the city. Since then, his team has conducted basic research of OLED and also built China’s first independently developed OLED lighting production line.
Lee said it’s important to give full play to domestic talents in the nano field. He also called for more overseas Chinese talents to come back to see the environment in their hometowns and serve the development.
