The Jiangsu section of the Yangtze River has recently been fully covered by 5G, reaching a milestone in a program by the provincial branch of China Mobile to offer access to the ultrafast mobile connection across main lakes, rivers and coastal areas, such as Taihu Lake and Hongze Lake.

Thanks to this new progress, law enforcement officers working on a vessel was able to use a drone to monitor the Fujiangsha waterway in the Zhangjiagang section of the great river in real time.

The Jiangsu branch of China Mobile started the program in January 2021 in order to meet the telecommunication needs of the shipping, fisheries and tourism industries as well as emergency response and law enforcement tasks.

Project leader Huang Lei said the river in Jiangsu runs about 433 km long with an average width of 3.7 km, 10 km wide at most. A base station for 4G can only cover an area with a radius of less than 4 km, so in the past the communication capacity in the center of the wide river parts was limited to voice calls and low-and-medium data transmission services.

The telecom operator has built and opened 307 5G base stations, expanding the coverage area with a radius of more than 6 km, so the fifth-generation of mobile network can be accessed anywhere in the Jiangsu section of the river.
