Wuxi will become the first city in Jiangsu Province to launch the HPV vaccination campaign starting on December 1, according to the city’s Health Commission on November 22.
Girls in their second year of middle school education in downtown area will be the first to get two doses of HPV vaccine free of charge. By early next year, at least 90% of girls at this education stage will take the first shot.
To promote the campaign, the Health Commission has set up a taskforce responsible for the project implementation, technical support, supervision and evaluation. It has also cooperated with the city’s education department to conduct surveys and promote awareness. Fiscal departments at all levels have earmarked funds to sponsor the program.
It’s estimated that the government will invest nearly 10 million yuan a year for HPV vaccination. This program is also included as one of the top governmental initiatives to improve people’s livelihood in 2022.
The vaccination in Liangxi, Xishan, Huishan, Binhu and Xinwu districts as well as the Wuxi Economic Development Zone will follow the principle of “voluntary participation, giving informed consent and free of charge.”
The bivalent vaccine used in the campaign is able to prevent 73% of HPV infections and the minimum interval is 6 months between the first and second dose.
People who have received the bivalent vaccine and are of age to receive the quadrivalent or nine-valent HPV vaccine can also proceed one year after completing the 2-dose schedule.
