Jiangsu became one of the provinces recognized by the State Council on September 28 for water-use efficiency progress during the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

Over the past five years, Jiangsu strengthened the water resources management, enhanced the allocation and conservation, and also actively explored water-saving practices. As the province increased GDP by 44% and grain production by 4.7%, it still controlled the total water consumption within 50 billion cubic meters.

The water use per 10,000 yuan of GDP and the water use per 10,000 yuan of industrial value-added went down 28.3% and 31.5% respectively. The effective utilization coefficient of farmland water irrigation rose from 0.598 to 0.616 in 2019. The rate of water quality compliance in key function areas under state assessment increased from 65.2% to 93.5%, with various indicators exceeding the target.

Jiangsu also took the lead in completing a water management campaign that shut down 1,333 projects and rectified 4,750 projects. Water sources in cities above the county level have all been placed under a more rigorous three-pronged management system. The province also made progress in synthesizing the water supply to rural and urban areas.
