The solar farm newly built at Tonghai 500 kV substation in Nantong City has been connected to the grid, the first such project that makes use of the roof of a 500 kV substation for clean energy in Jiangsu Province.
The project becomes feasible only after new technologies and similar practices have solved challenges including safety, fire or wind risk, and interference prevention.
A total of 974 solar panels were installed on the roof of nearly 6,000 square meters in size. With an installed capacity of 526 kilowatts. The project also included charging piles for electric vehicle.
Furthermore, the Jiangsu branch of State Grid has also developed a Big Data platform for comprehensive energy services, which enables real-time monitoring of the performance of solar panels and charging piles and facilitates rapid response.
With about 972 good sunshine hours annually, the project is expected to generate 578,600 kWh, equivalent to reducing CO2 emissions by 421.52 tonnes and saving 187.36 tonnes of standard coal each year.
