(Design redering of the expansion project)
The design plan for the Nanjing Public Health Medical Center expansion project is now in the publicity period before gaining approval, according to the Nanjing City Planning and Natural Resources Bureau on June 9.
In the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, the medical center was designated to specially receive and treat coronavirus patients and earned it a reputation as the Nanjing version of Huoshenshan Hospital, a rapidly built makeshift hospital in Wuhan, epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The expansion will involve a land area of 34.44 hectares and increase the total floor area to about 209,400 square meters. The newly built area of 94,400 square meters will be mainly for the hospital use and supporting facilities.
The main part of the expansion project includes a new building for viral infectious diseases, a building for fever ward, a medical isolation center, a new laboratory, and a facility for training.
After the completion of the project, the hospital can have 1,844 beds. In case of emergency, it can be rapidly renovated to host another 216 temporary ward with 432 beds.
At present, the expansion project is in the early stage of preparation and is scheduled to start by the end of this year.
