The BWF Sudirman Cup Finals 2023, the premier mixed team badminton championship in the world, opened in Suzhou City on May 14.
The biennial mixed team competition consists of five matches - men’s singles, women's singles, men’s doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Whichever team wins three matches clinches the tie.
The competition is the first international top single sports event held in China after the optimization and adjustment of the epidemic prevention and control policy. There will be 16 teams with more than 220 players competing in 4 groups, with China in Group A alongside Denmark, Singapore, and Egypt.
There will be two sessions a day for the group matches from May 14-18, with the quarter-finals to follow on May 19, semi-finals on May 20, and the Sudirman Cup Final on May 21.
On May 14, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark defeated Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 2:1 during the group A match. Axelsen, who can speak Chinese fluently, said the match was very intense and he’s happy to see many Chinese fans cheering for him.
