A grand exhibition to show the epic history of the Grand Canal, organized by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, opened at the National Museum of China in Beijing on April 10.
The impressive scroll, 135 meters long and 3 meters high, depicts vividly the development of the vast waterway system from different angles, such as culture legacy and natural environment.
Since 2018, a team of 15 calligraphers and seal carving artists from eight provinces visited the canal’s many landmark sites for the creation, which then undertook many revisions over two years.
The first chapter focused on four parts of the canal from excavating to expansion and completion. The second chapter highlights the diverse scenery on both sides of the canal throughout the year and the new appearance since the reform and opening up.
The scroll will be housed in the China Grand Canal Museum in Yangzhou, which is now under construction, for a permanent display after it opens.
